Help Shape the Future of Building Performance Measurement
BTS’ Technical Director, Dr Richard Jack, is leading Subtask 4 of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Annex 94 - a global collaboration between industry and academia working to standardise building performance measurement and promote its wider use. The Annex brings together experts from around the world. It’s currently in its early stages, agreeing final objectives, and launching the first work packages. The group met last month at the Vienna University of Technology to plan the next steps.

Subtask 4 focuses on building diagnostics - using Building Performance Evaluation (BPE) tools to uncover the real causes of unexpected energy use, overheating, mould risk, or underheating. The goal is to improve buildings more efficiently, cutting energy costs while enhancing comfort and indoor conditions.
All Annex 94 outputs will be open access, including reports and practical tools designed to help users access performance measurements and make the most of them.
As part of this work, we’ve launched a short stakeholder survey to understand the needs, barriers, and opportunities in measuring the actual energy performance of buildings. It takes no more than 15 minutes — and your input will directly inform this international research, helping to close the gap between designed and real-world performance.
