U-Value Measurement Training

An interactive in-person introduction to in-situ measurement of U-values. Delivered by our expert trainer across three sections, we cover the relevant policy, regulations and the associated opportunities; the differences between calculated and measured U-values and the available measurement techniques and; how to competently operate your equipment and software of choice.

Course Overview

Although the practice of carrying out U-value calculations is fairly widespread, this course is designed to introduce you to measuring U-values in-situ. Default U-values used in all mainstream heat loss modelling software can often misguide decision making at an individual property level, impacting investment decision making, EPC ratings, heat pump sizing and compliance with MEES legislation. By measuring U-values, the power is in your hands to override these default values and better reflect the true performance of the building in question.

The structure and content is designed to suit engineers, architects and energy professionals already well versed in U-value calculations through to new entrants seeking to gain the skills and knowledge required to undertake in-situ measurements. This course gives you hands-on experience with Heat3D (ISO 9869-2) and heat flux plate (ISO 9869-1) equipment, alongside the background knowledge of the two methodologies, enabling you to competently carry out U-value measurements for a range of different purposes.

Upcoming dates:

  • January 2026: Friday 16th
  • February 2026: Monday 23rd
  • March 2026: Thursday 26th

Course Content

The full-day in-person course comprises:

  • Background principles of U-value measurement along with the relevant policy, regulations and the associated opportunities.
  • Understanding the differences between calculated and measured U-values and the available measurement techniques (Heat3D and heat flux plate-based methods).
  • How to competently operate your equipment and software of choice.

Competent Person Scheme:

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be eligible to join the Elmhurst U-value Competency Scheme and certify building constructions in your capacity as an in-situ U-value measurement professional.

Why train with us?

Build Test Solutions manufactures and supplies U-value measurement kit. Our customers have carried out thousands of U-value measurements in the field. Training with us will provide you with invaluable insights not only into the technology and how it works, but also the practical side of planning and delivering measurements in practice.

Our trainers have many years of experience in the retrofit and new-build field, and we believe that we can offer each attendee the best possible personal learning experience by joining our course.

  • Practical hands-on experience - during the course will provide you with the confidence to start up on your own.
  • Meet our technical support team - you will have the opportunity to speak with our engineers who provide ongoing technical support once you venture out with your own U-value measurement kit.
  • Engaging course delivery - our interactive, practical day allows you to meet new people and ask lots of difficult questions. All at our workshop, where the equipment is made and serviced.
  • We are the people who make and service the kit - meet the team during and discuss any additional questions you might have about the equipment.
  • Check out our other measuring kits - you will have the chance to look at our other test kits for measuring building performance (used by DEA's, RC's, installers and designers of EEM's)
