Infrared U-value Measurement of Walls

Heat3D is an innovative mobile app that allows you to precisely measure heat flow and U-values of building elements using a low-cost, quick and non-invasive method. It can be used to detect heat flow rates, thermal bridging, poorly performing structures as well as assessing existing levels of insulation.

Extensive research into quantified U-values

Heat3D is the product of years of research and real-world testing into quantitative infrared thermography techniques. Developed in conjunction with mobile app specialists Electric Pocket and the energy experts at the University of Salford.

3D thermal model

The 3D thermal model allows U-values and heat flow rates to be inspected instantly. All data is uploaded to our online cloud and stored securely for diagnostics and data analysis.

Determine energy savings

Energy, running costs and CO₂ emissions of the heat loss area being measured allows cost savings and return on investment to be determined after improvements have been made.

Supports lots of devices

Compatible with a wide range of iPhones and iPads without needing lots of bulky additional equipment to be carried to the site.

Quick and easy to use

The fast and intuitive app allows measurements to be carried out with minimal training and supervision.

Rapid U-value measurement

Heat3D is an innovative mobile app that allows you to precisely measure heat flow and U-values of building elements using a low-cost, quick and non-invasive method.

Heat3D is designed to work on iPhones and iPads and uses a portable thermal camera to obtain results in a matter of hours as opposed to days or weeks using heat flux plates. The rapid nature of the measurement enables quantified U-values that are more accurate than manual calculation methods but achievable in a similar amount of time.

The Heat3D iOS app uses Apple ARKit to detect room features such as walls, floors and ceilings and construct a 3D model. When combined with a FLIR portable camera, infrared thermal images are projected onto the 3D model showing the heat signature through each surface. Quantitative infrared thermography is used to calculate the heat loss through these surfaces and, using temperature sensors, a U-value is calculated and presented on the device.

Measuring a U value across an entire element with Heat3D can take as little as 1-hour meaning that the measurement of actual U-values is now possible in all projects.

Why measure U-values using Heat3D?

With the advent of cheaper thermal imaging cameras combined with extensive research into ways to measure the underlying temperature and heat flux components accurately, Heat3D establishes a low-cost, quick and non-invasive alternative method to measuring U-values.

Determine insulation levels

Understand baseline thermal transmittance of walls and current insulation levels, allowing better target investment in insulation upgrades.

Retrofit improvement

Measure before and after insulation upgrades or retrofit works to determine the true energy, running cost and CO₂ savings delivered by improvements.

Check quality assurance

Check that the actual performance meets the designed performance. Identify poor installations, workmanship and conduct quality assurance testing.

Reduced remedial work

Measure during works and before completion to check that desired outcomes are being achieved. Save time, costs and improve quality by identifying issues and reducing remedial action.

Who is Heat3D designed for?

Heat3D can be used by anyone who wants to know the U-value or thermal performance of building elements in-situ. Measurements can be taken before, during and after insulation upgrades to verify performance improvements.

Frequently asked questions

How does Heat3D work?
Heat3D uses an iPad or iPhone connected to a FLIR ONE Pro thermal camera. The app then takes around 1 hour to perform a survey and measure the U-value of a section of wall and provide quantitative heat flow rates through the entire wall.
What can Heat3D be used for?
Heat3D will measure heat transfer through walls and provide a resultant U-value. U-values are a metric of thermal transmittance and can be used to determine how well a wall is performing and whether it would benefit from having insulation added.
What devices does Heat3D run on?
The Heat3D requires an iPhone or iPad with an A10X or better processor. These devices will have Apple ARKit and sufficient processing power to carry out U-value surveys.
What thermal cameras are supported?
The Heat3D app works with FLIR ONE infrared thermal cameras to obtain the surface temperature of the wall being measured. A FLIR ONE Pro or FLIR ONE Pro LT camera with a lightning connector is required to plug into your iPhone or iPad.
Are there any ongoing costs?
Yes, from year 2, a £375 annual licence, technical support and service charge will apply.
